An internet outage contingency plan gives your business a clear, rehearsed response, rather than forcing people to make decisions under pressure.
For small and mid-sized businesses, connectivity is no longer a background utility. It supports daily communication, access to cloud software, security systems, remote workers, customer service and payments. The right plan will not prevent every outage, but it can reduce disruption, protect customer confidence and help your team continue with the work that matters most.
Start with the real cost of lost connectivity
The first question is not which backup connection to buy. It is how long your business can operate without internet access and what stops first.
A professional services firm may be unable to access client records or send important documents. A healthcare provider may lose access to appointment systems. A warehouse or logistics business may be unable to process orders, print labels or communicate with drivers. A café, retailer or trades business may struggle to take card payments or receive new enquiries.
Map the services your team depends on, then decide which are critical within the first hour, the first working day and over a longer outage. Be specific. “Email” may be important, but accepting payments, accessing a hosted phone system or viewing customer jobs may be more urgent.

Backup connectivity is often the difference between an inconvenience and a lost day. The right option depends on how much capacity you need, how quickly you need it to take over and what your main line already uses.
A 4G or 5G mobile data connection can be a cost-effective option for many smaller offices. It can keep email, cloud applications and essential browsing available during a line failure. However, mobile coverage and indoor signal vary by location, and large file transfers, video meetings or many users can quickly consume available bandwidth.
A second fixed line offers stronger separation from mobile network limitations and can provide greater capacity. It may suit businesses that process a high volume of transactions, rely on cloud systems throughout the day or have several teams in one office. The trade-off is additional installation time and monthly cost.
For greater resilience, consider diversity rather than simply adding another service from the same route. Two connections that enter the building through the same duct, use the same local infrastructure or depend on the same power source can fail together. A managed review can identify whether the backup is genuinely independent enough for your level of risk.
Automatic failover is also worth discussing. With suitable network equipment, traffic can switch to the backup connection when the main line fails. This reduces manual intervention, but it should still be tested. Do not forget power and premises issues
Not every “internet outage” starts with the internet provider. A local power cut, damaged cable, water leak, building works or accidental disconnection can take down equipment inside your premises.

You can confirm that the backup connection works, check whether critical staff can access essential systems, make a test call through the phone fallback and verify that contact details are current. Record what did not work as expected, assign actions and update the document.
